What are Your Emotional Foods?

I was once asked by Whittier Hospital in California to conduct a behavioral weight reduction program for nurses, physicians and administrators. I was a behavior modification weight control specialist. We did not discuss food as an emotional thing. There are so many specialties that deal with weight control that sometimes we do not go beyond the mechanics of counting calories and rewarding dieting behavior.

This thing came up to me this morning when I “had” to have my cup of coffee with a cheese Danish. Sure, I could fight the urge to use food to make me feel good with vengeance, but after 40 years as a successful psychologist, I know better. I ate my oven baked Cheese Danish, savoring the taste, drank my Latte, watched a recap of the Winter Olympics, and raised two thumbs up in the air to Canada winning 14 gold medals! I take flax seed, vitamins, do exercise, and I have earned the right to enjoy my emotional foods. By the way, my favorites ¬†are Tim Horton’s cheese Danish, Starbucks’ latte’, home-made falafel, Cadbury chocolate, and, believe it or not, McDonald’s cranberry muffins. What are your emotional foods?
